Overview

Most gardens we are asked to redesign have one thing badly wrong and three things that are perfectly good. The survey decides which is which: levels, drainage, soil, aspect, and what is worth keeping. Mature trees, sound walls and established planting usually stay. Clearing a garden to bare earth makes a job easier to price and rarely makes it better, so we design around what is already working.

After the survey comes a concept plan, and a 3D visualisation on the larger schemes, so you can walk through the thing before committing to it. Then we build it in the order that works: walls, steps, paths, drainage and lighting first, topsoil, turf and planting after. Both halves are ours. That is the only reason the hard and soft landscaping ever meet properly instead of one being retrofitted around the other.

Pricing Guide

What it costs.

Ranges, not quotes. Access, levels, drainage and ground conditions move these numbers in both directions, and only the survey settles it. We publish them so you can sanity-check anyone else's figure before you agree to it.

Garden Design FAQs

Worth knowing first.

It starts with a free visit and a proper survey: levels, drainage, soil type, aspect, what is already there and what you actually want to use the garden for. That produces concept drawings, and on bigger schemes a 3D visualisation. Once the design is signed off you get a phased plan and a fixed-price quote covering both the hard and soft landscaping, so the planting is not a vague number at the bottom of the page.

Patios, paths, fencing, raised beds and lawns are nearly always permitted development. The exceptions worth knowing: conservation areas, listed properties — common around Windsor and parts of Ascot — decking raised over 300mm next to a listed building, and structures above 2.5m. Tree Preservation Orders catch out more people than any of those. We check all of it at survey stage, before we draw anything you might not be allowed to build.

That is most of what we do. Partial redesigns are more common than blank slates, and the interesting constraints are usually the good ones — a mature tree, a wall worth keeping, a level change that already works. The survey includes a straight assessment of what stays and what has had its day. If a feature is sound, we will say so, even where replacing it would be the bigger job for us.

A focused redesign — new patio, lawn and planting — runs two to four weeks on site. A multi-element scheme with hard landscaping, drainage, walls, structures and planting runs six to twelve. Weather moves those numbers more than anything else, which is why the programme goes in writing before we start and why we tell you when a wet fortnight has moved it.

Hard landscaping is everything structural and not alive: driveways, patios, paths, walls, fencing, steps, drainage and garden buildings. Soft landscaping is the living half: lawns, planting schemes, hedging, topsoil, water features. The hard work sets the bones and the soft work makes it a garden. We do both in-house, which means the drainage and the planting are designed by the same people rather than one being worked around the other.

Reviews

In their words.

Had TLS come out to do a decking job at our place in Bracknell. Communication was spot on from the first message right through to the job finishing — always kept us in the loop on timings. Turned up when they said they would, got the decking done to a great standard, and left the garden tidy afterwards. Fair price too. Would definitely use Total Landscaping Services again and recommend them to anyone in the Bracknell area.
