Overview
A patio is only as level as the base under it and only as dry as the falls built into it. Each surface wants a different base — full-bed adhesive under large-format porcelain, a proper bedding mix under sandstone, a ventilated frame under decking — and none of them forgive being laid on whatever was already there. Every patio we build is graded so rain runs away from the house instead of standing against the threshold in November.
Porcelain is what we specify most: frost-proof, almost no porosity, and it still looks the same after five winters with nothing more than a brush and a hose. Indian sandstone sits better against older brick and weathers into it rather than staying new-looking. Composite decking earns its place where you want the feel of timber without sanding and oiling it every spring. We bring samples to the survey and look at them in your garden, in your light, rather than under showroom lighting.

Worth knowing first.
For Berkshire weather, large-format porcelain takes the most abuse for the least attention: frost-proof, it will not stain, and moss struggles to get a hold on it. Calibrated Indian sandstone is our most popular choice on traditional properties — it weathers into older brick nicely, but it wants sealing every two or three years. Composite decking is the answer where you want timber underfoot without the spring maintenance. The property, the aspect and the budget decide it at survey, not a house preference.
Four to six days for a 40m² patio on ground that is roughly level: one to two days of groundworks and base, then laying, jointing and pointing. Steps, raised sections, drainage channels or a feature wall add days rather than hours. The programme goes in the quote in writing, and we would rather quote six days and finish in five than the reverse.
For a ground-level patio inside your own garden boundary, no — that sits within permitted development. It changes if the property is listed or sits in a conservation area, which covers parts of Windsor, Eton and a few streets in Ascot, and it can change again with raised decking. We check the constraints on your address at the survey rather than after the materials are ordered.
Porcelain is manufactured: consistent thickness, near-zero porosity, very hard to stain or frost-damage, and every slab looks like the one next to it. Indian sandstone is quarried, so tone and texture vary across a pallet and the surface warms up as it weathers. Porcelain wins on maintenance. Sandstone wins on looking like it belongs on a house built in 1910. Both last decades on a full-bed system, and neither lasts on a bad one.
Sometimes. We check the slab for level, falls, cracking and whether it holds water. A sound, correctly graded base can take porcelain or stone on a full-bed adhesive and saves you the cost of breaking it out. A cracked or ponding base gets removed, because everything laid on it will follow it, and that is a conversation we would rather have before quoting than in two years.
