Overview
Almost every failed driveway we are called out to look at failed underneath, not on top. The blocks are usually fine. What went wrong is below them: not dug deep enough, compacted in one go instead of in layers, or laid with nowhere for the water to go. So that is where the money goes on our jobs — a minimum 250mm excavation, geotextile membrane, MOT Type 1 built up and compacted in lifts, and the falls set before anything is laid on top.
What goes on top depends on the house. Block paving in herringbone or stretcher bond for most frontages, resin bound where you want a clean surface that stays permeable and keeps you inside permitted development, granite or sandstone setts where the property is old enough to deserve them. Groundworks, drainage, edging and surface are all ours — and at the survey we will tell you which of the three we think fits your plot, and why the other two do not.
Materials & Products

- Indian sandstone and natural granite setts
- UV-stable resin-bound aggregate systems
- MOT Type 1 & Type 3 sub-base material

Pricing Guide
What it costs.
Ranges, not quotes. Access, levels, drainage and ground conditions move these numbers in both directions, and only the survey settles it. We publish them so you can sanity-check anyone else's figure before you agree to it.

Paving & Driveways FAQs
Worth knowing first.
Usually not, if the water has somewhere to go. A permeable surface — resin bound, permeable block paving or gravel — or run-off routed to a lawn or border keeps most SL5 driveways inside permitted development. Go non-permeable over 5m² to the front of the house and you need approval. We check your specific plot at the survey and, where approval is needed, deal with the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead ourselves.
Twenty to thirty years on a sub-base that was built properly, and a fraction of that on one that was not. The blocks themselves almost never fail. Sinking, rutting and cracking are sub-base problems showing through the surface. One advantage of block over a poured surface: a damaged or settled block can be lifted and re-laid on its own, so a repair does not mean re-doing the driveway.
Resin bound mixes the aggregate and resin together before it is laid, so every stone is coated and the finished surface is permeable. Resin bonded paints resin onto an existing surface and scatters stone over the top: not permeable, sheds loose stone over time, and no good for SuDS requirements on a front drive. We install bound systems only. The names are one word apart and the products are not comparable.
Three to five days on site for a standard 50m² block-paved drive: one to two days digging out and building the sub-base, then laying, edging and jointing. Resin bound is quicker once the base is ready — the resin layer cures overnight. Every quote comes with a written programme, so you know which days the skip is outside and when you get your parking back.
Often. Marshalls and Tobermore ranges are widely stocked and a close match for existing blocks, sandstone or setts is usually findable. Older and discontinued ranges are harder, and we would rather bring samples to your survey and tell you honestly how close we can get than promise a match we cannot make. Where the match will not work, a contrasting border or feature band reads as deliberate instead of as a repair.
Reviews
In their words.
“Had TLS come out to do a decking job at our place in Bracknell. Communication was spot on from the first message right through to the job finishing — always kept us in the loop on timings. Turned up when they said they would, got the decking done to a great standard, and left the garden tidy afterwards. Fair price too. Would definitely use Total Landscaping Services again and recommend them to anyone in the Bracknell area.”
