Further from the river, around the town centre and Eton, the ground behaves more predictably — but the sub-bases under older driveways there are routinely undersized by modern standards, and resurfacing over one simply buys you a few years before the same failure returns.

Often it is the better choice. Resin bound is fully permeable, so it adds nothing to surface water run-off in an area where the water table is already high for much of the year, and it avoids the extra soakaway capacity a large non-permeable surface would demand. We confirm ground conditions at the survey before recommending it over block paving, because on some plots the answer changes.
