Bagshot gave its name to the ground it stands on. The Bagshot Formation — the sand that underlies this corner of Surrey and created the heaths across it — takes its name from Bagshot Heath, and it drains faster than almost anything else we build on.
Fast-draining is half a gift. Water disappearing is exactly what you want under a permeable driveway, and loose sand carrying no load whatsoever is exactly what you do not want under a retaining wall. So the build here is about consolidation: excavate properly, compact in thin layers, restrain every edge, and then let the ground get on with the drainage it is already good at.

- The Bagshot Beds are a series of sands and clays that take their name from Bagshot Heath, and free drainage is their defining characteristic. In practice that means percolation is usually excellent and soakaways genuinely work here, while any structure needs its bearing built rather than assumed. The sand is not uniform across the village, though, so we test rather than assume — a band of clay within it will stop water dead however well the plot next door drains.
- The A30 through the middle of it
- The A30, London Road locally, is the main east-west route straight through Bagshot and meets the A322 for M3 junction 3, which sits immediately to the north. Residents have campaigned for years about drivers cutting through the High Street and Guildford Road when the A30 backs up, and the through-traffic problem is well established. Deliveries here get booked off-peak or they sit in it with your materials on the back.
- Two councils, two sets of consents
- Surrey Heath Borough Council handles planning and conservation matters in Bagshot, while Surrey County Council is the highway authority — so dropped kerbs, vehicle crossovers and skip permits come from the county rather than the borough. It catches people out, particularly anyone who has previously lived on the Berkshire side of the border where a single unitary authority does both. We handle both applications rather than leaving you to work out which is which.

Usually yes — the Bagshot Formation sand the village is named after is free-draining, and percolation rates here are typically among the best we test anywhere in Surrey or Berkshire. The exception is where a band of clay sits within the sand, which will stop water moving regardless of what the surrounding ground does. A percolation test at survey settles it either way before the drainage is designed.
Because drainage and load-bearing are two different problems. Sand lets water through beautifully and carries almost no weight until it is properly consolidated, so a surface laid straight onto it will rut under a car and drop away at the edges within a season. We excavate to depth, compact granular material in thin layers and restrain every edge, then let the ground underneath do the draining it is already good at.
Yes, and we schedule around it. The A30 runs through the centre of the village and feeds M3 junction 3 just to the north, and when it backs up drivers divert through the High Street and Guildford Road. Deliveries and muck-away are booked outside peak flows so a lorry is not stuck in queueing traffic with a day of your materials on it.

Allow a couple of months from submission and start it early, because the crossover and the driveway want to be finished as one piece of work rather than one waiting on the other.
