A rigidly bedded, well-jointed surface on a properly compacted sub-base — the build underneath matters far more than the material on top. Flooding lifts and displaces units laid on loose sand with weak edge restraint. Porcelain, natural stone and block paving all cope when the base and the edges are right, and all three fail the same way when they are not.
