Eton Bridge has carried no motor traffic since 1970, which decides more about a job here than the design does. Everything arrives from the Slough Road end of the High Street, turns where there is room to turn, and leaves the same way.
That is the practical half of working in SL4. The other half is what the town is made of: listed frontages, walled courtyards behind the shops, and Thames floodplain ground that holds water long after the river has dropped. - You cannot drive into Eton across the river. Windsor Bridge was closed to motor vehicles in 1970 and now carries a moving traffic enforcement camera, so every delivery approaches from the north — Slough Road, or Eton Wick Road in from the B3026. That makes the High Street a dead end for a lorry. We size the delivery vehicle to the street, book a fixed unloading slot, and barrow the last stretch rather than block the road for an afternoon.
